Neutropenic – Hospital Stay

Many of you may be wondering why I’ve been MIA for the last few weeks.  Well, I’ve been in the hospital.  What began as a serious flu for several days resulted in a week’s long hospital stay with my white blood cell count plunging to a low of 0.8 – considered without a doubt neutropenic.  As a point of reference, the normal range is 4.0 to 12.0.  I was isolated and a good 25 bags of IV antibiotics were pumped into my system via IV.  It was NOT fun!  It’s all flu related.  The flu this year is harsh to say the least.  I’m taking a bit more time off so my body can catch up but wanted to put up a post so everyone isn’t in the dark.  I have others that will stand in in the future if necessary if something comes up and time gets [...] Continue Reading…

Monday – Sad Day

Yesterday was a tough day.  I won’t use names to protect the anonymity of the person involved, but someone who has been just an integral part of my treatment – more in the background but has just been an angel – took her own life over the weekend.  I received a call yesterday morning.  It was a shock to everyone.  She leaves behind a teenage son whom she left a note for before she carried out what I personally view as a very selfish, self-serving act.  It may be harsh to say, because I cared about her very much, but frankly that’s what it is – straight up.  She helped Rachael and I more than anyone will ever know.  I always knew that she was there for us if there was anything we needed.

Kids Can Teach Us

I believe I forgot to mention this.  Our son Aidan’s class is sponsoring a child in Mexico who is in need.  So, all of the students are encouraged to bring in some money once a month – a dollar or so.  Aidan works for his allowance and he has a number of chores and positive behaviors that he focuses on to earn a weekly sum. 

About a week ago, one morning he came out and told me he wanted to give some money to his teacher for this child.  I said ok bud, what do you want to give?  Mind you he’s been saving for months and he’s accumulated about $90 at this point.  He looked at me and said “this”.  In his hand was a 10 dollar bill.  I smiled and said are you sure pal?  How about 2-3 dollars?  He said no.  I said “how about 5 dollars?”  [...] Continue Reading…

Continuing Avastin

Just a quick update.  I am continuing with my bi-weekly avastin infusions and they are going fine.  I will have an MRI coming up in the middle of October – yet to be scheduled.  Walking into the infusion center every two weeks is always a bit sad on several fronts.  I typically pray for many people in there.  I’m blessed to be in the position that I am with a GBM.  So many people in there are just at the end of the road.  It’s their time but I take comfort in knowing that this is God’s plan for them.  Many of them smile and have joy in their eyes, still.  Others are just very tired.  I pray for all of them though.  The team there is very good – they really know how to take care of their patients.

Treatment Update and Concerts

I haven’t posted for a bit – just continuing treatment and spending time with family.  Things are good.  On the medical front, I had my bi-weekly infusion last Thursday and met with my neuro-oncologist.  I’m continuing with physical therapy every Wednesday and working hard to strengthen my left leg.  It’s still weak but working it is helping a lot.  I had a new brace made and that is also helping.  I wear the brace every other day as to not rely upon it too much. 

When talking to my neuro-oncologist, I learned that I do not have 3 years of my experimental vaccine left, only enough for 4 more “boosters” which are 16 weeks apart.  16 week intervals are a bit long for someone with a GBM.  This was a huge delta.  Turns out the initial 3 year estimate was not from Cognate, the company that actually controls and manufactures [...] Continue Reading…

9/11 and Trials

In the United States, today of course is the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in our history.  I first want to send out a tribute to those who lost their lives, family members who lost their loved ones and the courageous fire fighters and other civil servants who gave everything to try and save everyone they possible could.

We always imagine that we would be all right if a big crisis arose; but the big crisis will only reveal the stuff we are made of, it will not put anything into us. “If God gives the call, of course I will rise to the occasion.” You will not unless you have risen to the occasion in the workshop, unless you have been the real thing before a crisis. Radio Interview Re: DCVax

This is a great radio interview with Dr. Linda Liau, the creator and chief investigator/neurosurgeon at UCLA regarding DCVax.  Joining her is the chair of the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery at UCLA.  It’s about 20 minutes long but is very interesting, particulary if you are interested at all in immunotherapy.

I again am so blessed to have been given this opportunity and I seem to be responding to this well.  It is hard to tell thus far but my GBM is shrinking.  Here is the interview:

Faith and Update

I hope all is well with everyone.  I’ve been doing ok.  A few seizures here and there but not anything I can’t handle.  I had one at work on Monday and had to head home but it wasn’t too bad.  Once you have experienced enough of them, you can face them with little fear.

I was reading a devotional a few nights ago and it was about faith.  As brain tumor survivors, family members, friends etc – we pray.  We pray for healing, comfort, miracles, hope, strength – the list is long.  As I continued to read, I thought about my family, all of you, myself and many other people.  The piece compared the differences and altogether contradiction between faith and common-sense – that faith is not common-sense.  Can you have faith in God where your common-sense cannot place trust?
